La color purple is an epistolary novel, written by Alice Walker, published in 1982. The novel won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award in 1983. The novel was adapted for the cinema in 1985. The story is set in the Georgian countryside where we follow the life of a woman over thirty years through all the setbacks of life due to her minimal social position in American society from the 1900s to the 1930s.
Beginning of the 20th century. In the black community of the southern United States, two sisters, Celie and Nettie, live with their stepfather. The latter wants to get rid of Celie and offers it to Albert, a tyrannical widower who takes him to live with him. The two sisters will be separated for 20 years. Celie will find a friend in the person of singer Shug Avery, a singer, once Albert's mistress. Shug will help the two sisters to find each other.
