Chloé Anthony Wofford was born in Ohio to a working class family. As a child, Morrison read constantly and his father told him tales from the African community that would build his imagination and influence his literary style. She enters Howard University in Washington where she is called Toni after her second name Anthony. She obtained a Bachelor's degree in English before obtaining a Master's degree in the same field. She became an English teacher, then editor and teacher at Howard. She married Harrold Morrison in 1958 and divorced in 1964. But she kept her name.
As a publisher, she allowed black literature to emerge, but it was not until 1970 that she published her first book, in the form of a short story, the bluest eyes. In 1973, she published Sula then “Song of Solomon” in 1977, which enabled her to be nominated or to win national literature prizes.
