La parthenogenesis (of Greek parthenos, virgin, and genesis, birth) is the division from a gamete unfertilized female. It is a single-parent mode of reproduction. It belongs to the modes of sexual reproduction, because it requires the intervention of a gamete but in the absence of contribution of genetic material from another individual the result is similar to asexual reproduction.
This phenomenon is observed naturally in certain plant and animal species, but can also be caused artificially. In the plant kingdom, parthenogenesis is uncommon among angiosperms. Parthenogenesis is found in many taxa like nematodes, polychaete, oligochaete, nemerteans, arthropods (including in particular insects such asbee and aphids), They gastrotrichs and certain reptiles.
