THEstory of one of the greatest emblematic figures of the Jamaican resistance cannot be told without first depicting the portrait of brown niggers from Jamaica. Maroons were slaves who fled from their plantations to form their own communities in the mountainous regions of the island. They were excellent fighters and for the settlers, defeating them was not easy.
It was under the Spanish crown, around 1650, that the first slaves were able to flee. And later, when the British arrived on the island, a second part of slaves fled to join the first maroons. The maroon negroes of Jamaica were deported slaves from West Africa, from the region ofAkan, where the people of Kingdom of Asante (orAshantiwhich will give the Ghana current).
