Lhis book examines the period of partition, conquest and colonial occupation. The first two chapters focus on the attitudes of Africans and their degree of preparation in the face of the colonial phenomenon, on the history of European imperial ambitions. The following seven chapters examine African initiatives and reactions to partition, conquest up to the First World War. A general presentation is followed by more detailed analyzes region by region. Chapters 13 to 21 study the economic impact of colonial systems in Africa from 1919 to 1935, the functioning of the colonial economy in the former French, Belgian, Portuguese, British zones and in North Africa, the emergence of new structures social, demographic evolution. Finally, the role of religion and the arts in Africa during the colonial period. The last section traces the growth of anti-colonialist movements, the affirmation of African political nationalism, the interaction between black Africa and the blacks of the new world.
