SDid you know that 90% of the microphones used in the world are the results of the genius of James Edward West, an African American inventor, born in 1931 in Virginia. After graduating from Temple University in Philadelphia in 1957, West was hired by Bell Laboratories. Together with his colleague Gerhard Sessler, he developed the electric microphone which was patented in 1962. Its use is today used all over the world due to its high performance, reduced weight and low operating costs.
West has received numerous awards for his invention, he owns 47 other patents in the USA and 200 others abroad with Bell Laboratories. During the 70s, West was a member of the Black Lab Employees Association, which ran a program at Bell Labs that enabled 500 minorities to earn degrees in science, engineering, or math. James West works with Johns Hopkins University as a teacher-researcher.
