LKenya and Google will put all of Africa's cultural heritage online through the Google Cultural Institute. Despite the diversity of online services to access culture, we realize that African culture is very under-represented. This initiative helps to bridge the gap. The project is heralded as the largest initiative ever launched in Africa : the digitization of the cultural heritage of the whole continent. Diversity and African cultural wealth is on the Internet. The user can consult them from a computer and a mobile device (phone and tablet).
The project is jointly led by the Google Cultural Institute and the Kenya via its National Archives and Documentation Center. More than 1000 objects are already present on the platform. There are Kenyan heroes to discover, Shona art sculptures from Zimbabwe, Makondé in Tanzania and Karamojong in Uganda. Works of art carved in wood, stone and / or metal. A special place is reserved for the art of the West African calabash.
Exhibitions were held online in October 2015. The project is an invitation to learn the history of Lagos, to follow in the footsteps of Nelson Mandela and to preserve the various African ceremonies. The Google Cultural Institute is there in its missions. Another component of the project was the launch of the Kenya National Archives mobile application. This is the very first made using technologies from the Google Cultural Institute. Users have access to rare artifacts and documents, not to mention ancient tales.
