Vega is a revolution. This online dictionary deciphers Egyptian hieroglyphs and translates their meaning into French. And if at present, the translation of a hieroglyphic text can take several weeks, or even months, with Vega, it will be done in just a few hours. This jewel of technology, 100% Montpellier, was presented for the first time this Wednesday, on the Saint-Charles site of the Paul-Valéry University in Montpellier. Worn by the LabEx Archimede, and Intactile Design, a company specializing in digital technology, Véga required nearly five years of work.
A reference tool
“Until World War I, researchers had rudimentary tools at their disposal to decipher hieroglyphics,” explains Frédéric Servajean, head of Véga and professor of Egyptology at Paul-Valéry University. Then came the Berlin Dictionary, a monumental work in five volumes. To translate a text, the researcher had to go through a bunch of books. A very tedious work and generator of errors… ”
