LMost bacterial infections can be treated with antibiotics such as penicillin. However, these drugs are useless for viral infections, including the flu, colds, and deadly hemorrhagic fevers like Ebola virus. A team of researchers from the Lincoln Lab at MIT has designed a drug that can identify cells that have been infected with viruses, then kill the cells and end the infection.
The researchers tested their drug against 15 viruses. They found it to be effective against all, including rhinoviruses that cause the common cold, the common H1N1 flu, a stomach virus, a polio virus, dengue fever, and several other types of hemorrhagic fever. .
