Lhees are definitely formidable insects. We know their role in pollination, or the many benefits of the products of their hives. But we never imagined until now that their venom could even be used to fight cancer. And yet.
A team of researchers from the University of Illinois led by Prof. Pan Dipanjan succeeded in blocking the multiplication of cancer cells by injecting bee venom into cultured cells. More specifically, they used toxins from the venom which contain a protein, melittin, capable of attaching to the membranes of cancer cells and thus acting as a tumor agent. Their work was presented Monday, August 11 on the American Chemical Society website.
