THEThe appearance of the AIDS virus, and that of ebola and many other agents of the rainforest seems a natural consequence of the degradation of the biosphere in the tropico-equatorial regions. Viruses show up in parts of the world that are ecologically damaged. Many of them come from the violated edges of virgin forests, or from savannas quickly colonized by populations. Virgin forests are the deep reservoirs of life on the planet, they contain most of the world's plant and animal species.
Forests are also the largest reservoirs of viruses, since everything that lives carries viruses. When they emerge from an ecosystem, they tend to diffuse in waves throughout the human population, like echoes from a dying biosphere. Here are some names of emerging viruses: Lassa; Rift Valley; Oropouche; Rocio; Q; Guanarito; VEE; Dengue; Chikingunya; Machupo; Junin; hantaviruses; strains of rhabovirus such as mokolo and Kyasanur; HIV - which can be categorized as an emerging virus because its penetration into humans is increasing rapidly, with no foreseeable end; the Semliki Forest Officer; Crimea-Congo; Siudbis; o'nyong nyong; São Paulo; Marbug; Ebola Sudan; Ebola Zaire; Ebola Reston.
